I’ve been writing about science and technology–life science and information technology–for four decades, mostly as the top editor of publications like Bio/Technology (renamed Nature Biotechnology), Pharmaceutical Technology, and BioTechniques. During that time I’ve learned some things, some of which are still relevant, like how to take better photos than the one above. I shot this at the Kennedy Spaceflight Center on April 11, 1981, the day before STS-1 Columbia went into space for the first time. The illegible sign in the foreground reads, “Caution: Rough Area Invested with Poisonous Snakes.

So I love learning new stuff and explaining it to anyone who is interested…or can’t move fast enough to get away.
